A new restaurant with a decidedly local flair — American Pie Pizza, Subs and Catering — will open its doors at 401 Black River Blvd. at 4 p.m. today.

The eatery is in the site that formerly hosted Tony’s and Parma’s pizzeria’s over the past several the years, and the new restaurant is led by owner, and lifelong resident, Jim Campanaro, who is bringing a collection of patriotic-themed menu items (hence the American Pie name which is not a reference to the popular movie franchise).

There’s a pizza called, “The Donald” - a pie with pepperoni, sausage, ham, meatballs and bacon, while “The Jefferson” is a pie of mushrooms, peppers, onions and black olives.

Elsewhere, specialty subs such as “The Columbus” carry “three generous sized homemade meatballs, marinara sauce, baked mozzarella cheese,” the menu reads.

More dishes are planned as time goes on, but for right now, his favorite menu item is a chicken and greens sandwich, he said Thursday in the middle of last minute preparations to open.

First things first, though. There is new exterior signage coming, Campanaro said.

Despite the former Parma’s signs still being up Thursday morning due to weather not cooperating with new installations, Campanaro welcomes everyone to stop in once the doors open this afternoon.

So, why a pizzeria?

“I’ve been doing business since I was 16 years old. I enjoy it,” he said. The patriotism comes from community pride.

Campanaro has lived in Rome his entire life and has an interest in local history.

Pointing to parts of Rome history that are of national significance — such as Fort Stanwix — he thought it fitting to continue to honor Rome.

The details

Campanaro added a few more details ahead of the restaurant launch.

There will be fish fries every Friday throughout the year.

Delivery will be available. All points inside Rome for $2.

After opening, the hours will be as follows: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday - 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday - 11 a.m. to midnight and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday.
