UTICA  — Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. announced the appointment of Shaun Kaleta as the county’s new director of economic development.

“Shaun’s unique combination of experience in government, education and communication made him a standout for the position of economic development director,” Picente said. “With so much growth happening in Oneida County right now, we look forward to utilizing the skills he brings to the table in order to further our progress.” 

Kaleta assumed the role of director in February, the announcement said, adding he brings years of experience to his new role, having served as supervisor of the town of Whitestown since 2016 and for five years as a trustee in the village of Oriskany.

As the youngest Whitestown supervisor ever elected, Kaleta has worked with local, state and federal governments, forging partnerships that have benefited local residents with projects such as the Sauquoit Creek Channel & Floodplain Restoration Program, the rehabilitation of the Utica Street Bridge in Oriskany, the continued development of Wyman Park on Route 840 and ongoing upgrades to the Whitestown Community Center. 

He has also worked with businesses and private stakeholders to foster economic development and secure millions of dollars in grants and PILOT agreements, the announcement said.

In addition, Kaleta spent several years working as a communications and public relations specialist for the Westmoreland School District and Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES, as well time as an assignment editor and producer with WKTV News Channel 2 and WUTR/WFXV/WPNY Eyewitness News.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work for the betterment of all of Oneida County,” Kaleta said. “Because of County Executive Picente’s vision, financial commitment and relentless work and advocacy, there has been so much positive change and growth in Oneida County over the last decade.”

“From Marcy Nano to Skydome at Griffiss to the Nexus Center in Downtown Utica – and everything in between – Oneida County is not only open for business, but people are once again choosing Oneida County as a place to work, live and have fun,” Kaleta added. “While much has been accomplished, there’s potential to do even more. It’s an exciting time to be in Oneida County, and I’m looking forward to playing a role in its continued transformation.”

Kaleta has a master’s degree in public administration in public affairs from the University of Missouri and bachelor’s degree in government and politics from Utica University.

His community involvement includes serving as a vice president of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Oneida County Justin F. Kelly Division, a member of the Utica St. Patrick’s Day Parade Operations Committee and volunteer for the Irish and Polish nights at the Knights of Columbus William E. Burke Council 189. He is also a volunteer coach for the Utica University men’s tennis team.

Kaleta replaces Dave Catalfamo, who retired as Oneida County Director of Economic Development on Jan. 1 after serving nearly four years in the position.
