New businesses take shape in former Kmart parking lot
HERKIMER — The former Kmart parking lot in Herkimer is vacant no more.
Since the store closed in 2017, the lot at the corner of South Washington and State streets has been empty. Now, there are two new business buildings there. The T-Mobile building has signs that say “open,” while the WellNow Urgent Care building has signs that say “coming soon” and “now hiring.”
T-Mobile offers fast and reliable 5G Internet coverage, according to its website. Customers can also purchase phones, tablets and accessories, upgrade or trade in their phones and take advantage of other products and services.
WellNow Urgent Care provides quick, quality care for non-life-threatening injuries and illnesses for patients of all ages, its website states. It also offers rapid testing for COVID-19.
The Kmart parking lot has entrances on both Route 5 (State Street) and South Washington Street in the village.
Both buildings can be seen along the State Street side of the property with the WellNow structure situated on the site where the building that housed an insurance company’s offices stood for many years. The State Farm Insurance office moved to EFK Plaza, a short distance east on State Street, and its former building was razed as part of the project.
“It’s exciting to see progress in Herkimer,” said Mayor Dana Sherry.
Caliber Commercial Brokerage of Rochester announced plans in 2021 to purchase the Kmart site and subdivide it to create four new commercial development pads.
There are no plans for building out the remaining parcel at this time, according to Timothy Meleca, a member of the team working on the project. He added that the Kmart building has been sold and he could not comment on the new owner’s plans for the structure.
The Herkimer Kmart store opened in March 1979 on the South Washington Street site where much of the Standard Furniture Company’s manufacturing plant once stood. The store’s pharmacy suddenly closed in April of 2017 and that move was followed in July by an announcement by Sears Holding that it would be closing 43 of its locations by October, including the Herkimer Kmart store.
