Neurosurgeon to speak on brain aneurysms
ROME — The local chapter of the Joe Niekro Foundation Brain Aneurysm Support Group will host Dr. Satish Krishnamurthy at its upcoming support group meeting on Monday, April 10. Meetings take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on the second Monday of each month in the social hall at St. John the Baptist Church, 210 E. Dominick St.
Krishnamurthy is a neurosurgeon and professor of neurology at Upstate University Hospital.
A brain aneurysm is an abnormal bulge in a brain artery that develops where the blood vessel wall is weakened.
Medical experts estimate that between 2% to 5% of the general population in the United States has or will develop a cerebral aneurysm. Women, particularly those over age 55, are more likely than men to have a brain aneurysm with about 1.5 times the risk for men.
“We welcome all individuals affected by brain aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation (AVM), hemorrhagic stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI) who are in need of support and information,” an announcement by the group reads.
“Feel free to invite family, friends, and caretakers as they are welcomed as well. ... The social hall is downstairs and is a very nice and spacious room,” the announcement added. “There is an elevator for those that can’t navigate stairs. We park in the back parking lot and go in that door. There is ample parking.”
There is plenty of seating, chapter representatives say, but they ask that those planning to attend call 315-533-6467 and leave a message or email romeny@joeniekrofoundation.org so they can get an approximate count.
