MARCY — A decision has been made regarding the upcoming basketball season for both the SUNY Poly Wildcats men’s and women’s basketball programs.
The North Atlantic Conference President’s Council reached a decision on Monday saying that the conference basketball season would not be happening this year due to the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic. The conference runs between three states and the presidents decided that it would not be feasible to conduct a NAC regular or postseason basketball schedule.
Teams, like SUNY Poly, will be able to play games at their own discretion.
“I’m disappointed for my guys but not surprised by the NAC decision,” SUNY Poly men’s basketball coach Rob Schoener said. “I’m looking forward to getting back out on the court with them when it is safe to do so.”
“While our NAC schedule has been canceled, we are leaving the door open for a non-conference competition schedule,” SUNY Poly women’s basketball coach Jess Skelton said. “We will have to be creative, but our hope is to salvage what we can of the 20-21 season for our student-athletes and our fans.”
SUNY Poly Athletic Director Kevin Grimmer said in a statement, “As the pandemic rages on, it does not make sense to put anyone on our campus at risk this winter. We remain entirely sympathetic to our student-athletes, coaches and staff for having to forgo their first foray into NAC basketball, but we look forward to better times soon and the return of all Wildcat sports.”
