NAACP to host trio of upcoming events


The Rome Branch of the NAACP will host a face mask and hand sanitizer giveaway, a general membership meeting as well as a Freedom Fund virtual event this month.

On Monday, Oct. 19, members from the NAACP Rome Branch will team up with Rep.  Anthony J. Brindisi, D-22, Utica, to hand out face masks and hand sanitizer at Gansevoort Elementary School, 758 W. Liberty St., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Later on Monday, Oct. 19, the NAACP Rome Branch will hold a general membership meeting at the Zion Episcopal Church, 140 W. Liberty St., at 6 p.m. The meeting is for members only. Attendees must wear a face mask and practice social distancing.

The purpose of this meeting is for the nominating committee to issue its report and to put forth those who would like to be nominated as officers of the branch

On Saturday, Oct. 24, the NAACP Rome Branch will help to co-host a virtual Freedom Fund event. Three NAACP branches from Central New York — Rome, Syracuse-Onondaga and Auburn-Cayuga — are co-hosting the event. Honorary co-chairs are Jacqueline Nelson, Rome Branch president; Linda Brown-Robinson, Syracuse-Onondaga Branch president; and Dr. Eliezer Hernandez, president, Auburn-Cayuga Branch.

The key note speakers for the virtual events are Karen Boykin-Towns, vice chairman of the NAACP Board of Directors; and the Hon. Frank Scott Jr., the first African-American Mayor of Little Rock, Ark. The masters of ceremonies are Karen Franklin-King, a consultant, journalist and performer; and the Hon. David Paterson, a former governor of New York.

Entertainment will be provided “Doctuh” Mike Woods, Grammy music educator award nominee; Jackiem Joyner, saxophonist; and Sean McLeod, an executive producer and businessman.

The cost is $30 for a virtual ticket; $35 for a virtual ticket and Membership; $45 for virtual ticket, dinner and gift bag. A virtual ticket will be emailed after payment. Virtual check-in will begin at 4 p.m. with the event starting at 5 p.m.  

Dinner can be purchased and is being prepared by Gardeners Farm to Table, 401 W. Dominick St. There are three meal choices: Fried or jerk chicken with rice and collard greens; pork chops and gravy rice and collard greens; or fried catfish with salt potatoes and collard greens. Meals can be picked up at Gardeners Farm to Table prior to the virtual event.
