ROME - Vincent Petronio, director of hospitality programs at Mohawk Valley Community College, is authorized to administer the Training for Intervention Procedures (TIPS) exam, giving students a new opportunity to earn an industry-recognized certification in their field.

Petronio can give the TIPS certification exam to MVCC hospitality program students upon completion of the course Beverage & Bartending Management. TIPS, a comprehensive course designed to educate and train service professionals to safely serve alcohol, focuses on recognizing the early signs of overconsumption, strategies for cutting off guests who have had too much to drink, and how to handle difficult or dangerous situations involving alcohol.

“This certification will give students the knowledge and confidence they need to recognize potential alcohol-related problems and intervene — valuable skills that will give them an advantage in the job market,” the MVCC announcement said.

Petronio, who joined MVCC’s School of Business and Hospitality in 2021, is an executive chef and entrepreneur in the Mohawk Valley, who with his business partners launched the restaurant "motus" in downtown Utica.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in culinary arts management at the Culinary Institute of America.
