UTICA — The Center for Leadership Excellence at Mohawk Valley Community College, 1101 Sherman Drive, is recruiting participants for two of its professional leadership development programs for 2023.

The programs include a virtual Board Leadership series as well as the center’s Neighborhood Rising experience.

Board Leadership

The virtual Board Leadership series will begin on Tuesday, Feb. 14. This program, a partnership with the New York Council of Nonprofits (NYCON), prepares participants for board service through an understanding of board governance, best practices of high-performing boards, and nonprofit organizational structure.

It’s open to those currently serving on boards as well as those interested in pursuing a board seat.

Schedule and topics include:

  • Board Dynamics, Roles, and Responsibilities, Feb. 14;
  • Running Effective Meetings and Decision Making, Feb. 28;
  • Board Building and Placement, March 14;
  • Strategic Directions, March 28;
  • Fundraising and Resource Development, April 11; and
  • Financial Oversight, April 25.

Sessions will be held via Zoom from 4 to 6 p.m. The cost is $40 per person per session, and participants can register for one session or the entire series. Scholarships are available, thanks to the Mele Family Fund at the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties. The scholarship application deadline is Feb. 7. For more information, email cle@mvcc.edu.

Neighborhoods Rising

Neighborhoods Rising will run from February to June. This leadership and empowerment cohort experience is designed to provide Black and Latinx adults with enhanced leadership capacity and skills to address ongoing and emerging community development changes.

Over the course of 10 evening sessions, participants will discover their “why” — the deeply personal catalyst that drives their passion to lead, expand their understanding of the principles of grassroots leadership, develop strategies to expand social capital, cultivate working relationships with community leaders, and build their networks and personal narrative to support their ambition of making a positive difference in the community.

The deadline to apply is Tuesday, Jan. 24. Tuition is free to all participants, thanks to the support of Excellus BlueCross BlueShield and Price Chopper’s Golub Foundation.
