TOWN OF MARTINSBURG — A Croghan man was charged with assaulting two people inside his ex’s residence and then with harassing deputies while he was being processed on charges related to the incident.
Lewis County Sheriff’s deputies said an investigation revealed that Scott A. Danforth, 48, of 9768 Route 812, entered a residence on Swiss Road, belonging to a “former significant other,” and while inside, assaulted and strangled a third party in the home at 11:55 p.m. Thursday.
During the assault, Danforth also injured another person trying to break up the altercation and protect the victim.
Danforth then fled the scene in his vehicle, deputies said.
The suspect was later located at his residence Friday and charged with second-degree burglary, a class C felony; second-degree strangulation, a class C felony; two counts of second-degree assault, a class D felony; second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, an interlock device violation and unlicensed operator.
He was arraigned in Town Court and sent to Lewis County Jail without bail.
Also, deputies said while at Lewis County Public Safety Building being processed on the charges before his arraignment, Danforth slapped a bag containing evidence out of a deputy’s hands. For that incident, Danforth was charged with second-degree harassment and will appear in Lowville Village Court.
