Mother faces charges after tot wanders second time

A mother was charged with endangering her 2-year-old child for the second time in as many months Monday after neighbors found the toddler on the front porch of their residence.

Rome Police Detective Jeffrey M. Lanigan said at 10:40 a.m., patrols responded to the 500 block of Lawrence St. after a couple called and said they found a 2-year-old on their porch.

Police attempted to find the child’s parents, and eventually the mother was located at 501 Lawrence St.

Lanigan said the mother, who was identified as Jessica R. Stephenson, 23, of the same address, stated she “fell asleep” when the child was able to make their way out of the residence.

The house where the child was located is one block away and across the street from the toddler’s actual residence, Lanigan said.

Stephenson was charged with a misdemeanor count of endangering the welfare of a child.

Lanigan said this is the second such incident to occur, involving Stephenson, and that a similar incident was investigated in March.

Stephenson was released on an appearance ticket to appear
in City Court. County Child
Protective Services is also investigating, according to officials.
