Upwards of 30,000 vehicle and traffic tickets were issued by the New York State Police during the drunken and impaired driving crackdown this holiday season, according to Governor Kathy Hochul.

The annual crackdown lasted from Dec. 14 to Jan. 1. Authorities said the state police issue 32,934 tickets and charged 453 people with driving while intoxicated. There were also 4,417 accidents across the state during that period, leading to 528 injuries and 8 fatalities.

Every year, the state police and other local law enforcement agencies conduct drunken and distracted driving crackdowns during major holidays.

“I thank the state police and local law enforcement for their continued efforts to get dangerous drivers off the roads and protect all New Yorkers,” Governor Hochul said in a release.

“We will not stand for the preventable tragedies that are caused by impaired and reckless drivers, and we will continue our aggressive enforcement measures to make the roads safe for all who use them.”

During the campaign, state police utilized sobriety checkpoints, additional DWI patrols and used both marked and unmarked vehicles. State police also issued 11,305 tickets for speeding, 912 tickets for distracted driving, 916 seat belt violations and 316 violations of the Move Over Law.

In Central New York, 2,945 tickets issued in total, with 41 drunken drivers, 753 tickets for speeding and 11 Move Over violations, authorities stated.
