More than 100,000 tickets issued during end-of-summer crackdown
More than 100,000 tickets were issued across the state during the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign at the end of August, according to the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.
The crackdown on drunken and impaired driving lasted from Aug. 19 through Sept. 5, hosted by the state STOP-DWI program. During that two-week period, authorities said 2,823 tickets were issued for impaired driving.
“There’s no excuse for impaired driving. It’s 100% preventable,” said Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner and GTSC Chair Mark J.F. Schroeder.
“Through education and enforcement, we will continue our work on reducing impaired driving. I applaud our law enforcement officials for their commitment and hard work in getting dangerous drivers off our roadways.”
A total of 100,904 tickets were issued during that period for other violations, including 23,646 tickets for speeding, 4,113 tickets for not wearing a seatbelt and 685 violations of the Move Over Law.
Last year, there was a rise in impaired-driving crashes, officials said.
According to data from the University at Albany’s Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research, police-reported impaired driving crashes in New York increased 11% from 2020 to 2021.
