Material fire doused at Solid Waste Authority in Utica
UTICA — A fire inside a large compactor at the Oneida Herkimer Solid Waste Authority in Utica remains under investigation, according to the Utica Fire Department.
Fire officials said the flames were spotted deep inside a 40-yard compactor at the main building on Leland Avenue in north Utica around 9:12 a.m. Friday. Officials said the flames were spreading to some materials outside of the compactor, and heavy smoke was pouring from the building.
With assistance from Authority employees, fire officials said they were able to get the burning materials out of the compactor and doused. There was no damage to the building.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Utica Fire Marshal's Office.
