Mary Elizabeth Prugar, age 95, formerly of Rome, passed peacefully in Myrtle Beach, SC on April 11, 2019. She was born on June 12, 1923 in Cutchogue, Long Island, NY, the daughter of Stanley and Mary Ambroski. Mary graduated from Mattatuck High School and attended Browne’s Business School in Jamaica, NY.
On January 9, 1944 she married John Paul Prugar at Our Lady of Ostrabrama Church in Cutchogue. They were married 51 years before his death in 1995. She was a resident of Rome for 74 years.
Mary retired from Griffiss Airforce Base in January 1984 after 23 years of service. She also worked part time at Rome Polish Home making pierogie and galombki as well as being site manager at South Rome Senior Center for the nutrition program for 4 years. Mary was a member of Transfiguration Church. She served as an officer of Transfiguration School’s Mothers’ Club as well as the Rosary Society. She was a member of South Rome Senior Center.
Surviving are her sons John M. (Lee) Prugar of Watertown and Joseph S. (Eileen) Prugar of St. James, NY; granddaughters Heather (Joe) Curatolo, Holly Prugar, Danielle Prugar and Evelyn Prugar; a great-granddaughter Morgan Curatolo; and nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by 4 brothers and 5 sisters.
Her funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on May 17 at Transfiguration Church. Internment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
