Martial arts school opens in Boonville

BOONVILLE — A new martial arts school is now open, calling the back of the old fitness center building at 199 Post St. home.

The Black River Brazilian Jiu-jitsu/H.I.S. Academy of Martial Arts offers jiu-jitsu classes as well as Kenpo Karate classes under the direction of Dan Maher, a 10th degree black belt. Maher will teach jiu-jitsu on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Fredrick Croniser, a second degree black belt, and Michael Lieber, a first degree black belt, will teach Kenpo on Monday and Wednesday evening.

The cost of classes will depend on which martial art a student decides to learn; however, the fee is a flat monthly fee regardless of the number of classes a student attends. Students can come once a week or twice for the same price.The Kenpo classes are $35 per month for all students; however, family discounts are available. The Jiu-jitsu classes are $25 for children and $40 for adults. Kenpo classes run from 5:30 to 6:15 for children and 6:30 to 7:15 for teens/adults. Jiu-jitsu classes run from 6 to 7 for children and 7 to 8:30 p.m. for adults.
