Mariano among Athletic Director of Year honorees

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Norwich University athletic director and Rome native Tony Mariano was named a recipient of the Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year award.

The award is presented by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.

Mariano is one of four Division III athletic directors and 28 total spanning seven divisions to earn the honor.

Colgate ahletic director and vice president Victoria Chun was also a recipient of the award at the Division I-FCS level.

Winners will receive their awards during the James J. Corbett Awards Luncheon on June 29 in Washington D.C.

The annual ADOY award highlights the efforts of athletic directors at all levels for their commitment and positive contributions to student-athelets, campuses and their surrounding communities.

Maraino has been the athletic director at Norwich for the past 26 years.

He spent his first 14 years at Norwich as a coach, guiding the Cadets’ mens soccer team from 1978-1984, leading the 1984 team to the ECAC playoffs with an 11-4-1 record. In 1982, Maraino was named the men’s head hockey coach and guided Norwich to the teams’s first ever NCAA tournament appearance the same season.

In his time at the helm of the hockey team, he led them to eight ECAC tournaments and received two NCAA tournament appearances.

In 1987, Maraino was named Division III National Coach of the Year by the American Hockey Coaches Association and the New England Division III Coach of the Year.

He also served as chair of the NCAA Division III Men’s Ice Hockey Committee and chair of the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee.

Norwich has won 11 national championships during Mariano’s tenure as athletic director.

Mariano is a 2001 inductee of the Rome Sports Hall of Fame.
