Accused of causing a scene at evening mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Utica on Saturday, a 30-year-old man is facing a misdemeanor charge.

Police said Jonathan Morse, of Marcy, tried to gain access to the altar on two separate occasions during the 9:30 p.m. service on Saturday. Off-duty police officers from Utica and the state police in attendance stopped Morse and asked him to leave.

Authorities said Morse started yelling and causing a disturbance, refusing to leave. On-duty Utica police officers responded to the disturbance and Morse was taken into custody.

Morse is charged with one count of disrupting a religious service, a misdemeanor, authorities said. He is scheduled to appear in City Court.
