The Rome Free Academy marching band placed first in its division in its first field band competition of the season last weekend at an event at Jordan-Elbridge High School, the Rome school district said.
The RFA Marching Black Knights won in their new Large School 2 division, finishing ahead of Horseheads, said band director Grayson Keller Shelton. Last October the RFA band won a state championship in the Large School 3 competitive category.
Also at the event at Jordan-Elbridge, Westmoreland won in the Small School 2 category while New Hartford won in the Small School 1 category, according to the New York State Field Band Conference website.
Other competitive categories at the event included Large School 3 and Small School 3, plus National.
