UTICA — A 50-year-old Utica man has been charged with manslaughter following the homicide on Eagle Street in the city early Wednesday morning, according to the Utica Police Department.

Police said Matthew Johnston has been charged with one count of first-degree manslaughter. He was arraigned in court late Wednesday and was sent to the Oneida County jail in lieu of bail. He is scheduled to appear in Utica City Court.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.

At about 3 a.m. Wednesday, police said Johnston walked up to the fire station on Park Avenue and claimed there was an unresponsive man on his porch in the 100 block of Eagle Street that needed immediate medial attention. Police and fire officials responded to the scene and found the victim deceased, with obvious injuries to his face and hands.

While police were investigating the scene, they said Johnston returned and attempted to interfere with the investigation. He was taken into custody after fighting with the officers on the scene, police stated.

An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.

Anyone with information on the attack is asked to call the Major Crimes Unit at 315-223-3556. Anonymous tips can be sent to the website www.MohawkValleyCrimeStoppers.com or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-866-730-8477.
