TOWN OF LEE — After a two-year hiatus, Brian Mandryck is back as chairman of the town Board of Fire Commissioners.
Mandryck was elected chairman for 2018 during the board’s organizational meeting Monday night, succeeding Patrick Hetherington who had been chairman for the past two years and now will be vice chairman.
Mandryck previously had chaired the board from 2009-2015, and was vice chairman for the past two years.
The board also conducted its regular monthly meeting Monday. Among topics:
• Mandryck said after the meeting that he “decided to give it a shot again,” regarding his return to the chairman position, adding that some Lee Center Volunteer Fire Department members had asked him if he would be interested. Overall, he is in the second year of his third 5-year term on the board.
Hetherington said he supported Mandryck becoming chairman again, adding “it is always good to rotate responsibilities to keep people active and engaged.”
The five-seat commissioners board manages fire protection within the taxpayer-funded Lee fire district. It oversees the Lee Center Volunteer Fire Department while also contracting with the independent Lake Delta Volunteer Fire Department.
The board has “a lot of things head of us,” Mandryck commented. He cited plans to continue replacing older Lee Center firefighting vehicles with new ones; he noted the department’s “old mini-pumper,” and said “if things fall together there could be a 2018 purchase.”
In addition, further improvements are needed at the Lee Center firehouse, said Mandryck, including some exterior work such as pavement-area aprons near doors; repairing stucco areas on walls; repairing roof leaks. A “walk-through” of the building is planned to compile a list of work needed and set priorities including budget considerations, he added.
Also this year, Mandryck observed, commissioners may “look at older policies” involving fire district operations and consider updates. He said “a few go back quite a few years.”
• The board welcomed newly elected commissioner James Fisher, who defeated incumbent James Mondrick in the December election. Hetherington said the board was very thankful for Mondrick’s service to the board and the community.
• Hetherington said a renovation project for Lee Center firehouse doors is “reaching completion except for punch list items prepared by the architect” involving a few final steps needed. He added “some punch list items such as concrete work will wait for spring.” The project involved reconfiguring four firehouse doors into three wider doors to better fit larger vehicles.
The board authorized payments of $72,293 of the total project cost of $89,548, said Hetherington. The contractor is the M.J. Dakota company of Oneida.
• Among purchases approved for the Lee Center fire department was $3,400 for a TurboDraft Fire Eductor unit for accessing static water sources that are not readily accessible using conventional drafting techniques, said Hetherington.
