TOWN OF RUSSIA — A man was taken into custody following a stand-off where he threatened to commit a murder-suicide at his home on Military Road Sunday.
State Police at Herkimer said at about 6:20 p.m., troopers responded to a 911 hang-up call at 5111 Military Road. Upon arrival, they were met by a 36-year-old woman who stated that Mathew E. Bienick, 42, of the same address, threatened to kill her and then himself.
Troopers said the victim stated Bienick punched her in the nose during an argument, and that a few weeks prior, the suspect grabbed a rifle from the closet and placed the barrel in her mouth. The woman then stated Bienick fired the gun inside a bedroom to get her attention, troopers said.
Bienick refused to speak with troopers and barricaded himself inside his residence. State Police Crisis Negotiators and the Special Operations Response Team (SORT) then responded to the scene.
By midnight Monday, Bienick surrendered himself to law enforcement and he was taken into custody without incident, troopers said.
Bienick was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class D felony; second-degree menacing, a class A misdemeanor; second-degree reckless endangerment, a class A misdemeanor; second-degree unlawful imprisonment, a class A misdemeanor; and second-degree harassment, a violation.
He was arraigned in Town of German Flatts Court and sent to Herkimer County Jail in lieu of $15,000 cash bail, and will re-appear in court on Dec. 17.
