Man hospitalized in Route 49 crash

TOWN OF MARCY — A Utica man was hospitalized after the driver of the vehicle he was riding in fell asleep during his morning commute on Route 49 Friday and crashed into a culvert.

Sheriff’s deputies said Derrick Bien-Aime, 25, of Utica, was driving a BMW sedan westbound near the Cavanaugh Road exit when he fell asleep and exited Route 49 to the north at 7:25 a.m.

Bien-Aime’s vehicle struck an earth embankment and became airborne, propelling the car over the on-ramp to Route 49 from Cavanaugh Road.

The vehicle then struck a culvert and several trees before it eventually came to rest and caught fire, deputies said.

Shai A. McBride, 27, of Utica, was a passenger in the vehicle and suffered serious injuries to his hip and ribs. McBride was transported by Kunkel Ambulance to St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Utica for treatment.

Bien-Aime, who was not injured, was charged with multiple Vehicle and Traffic violations. He will appear in Town Court.

Westbound traffic on Route 49 was slowed to a single lane until the vehicle and debris from the crash could be removed by crews on the scene.

Maynard Fire Department, state police and West End Auto assisted.
