UTICA — A 27-year-old man is facing multiple charges after being found with a loaded handgun in Utica on Monday, a day after he fired several shots at a group of people, according to the Utica Police Department.

Police said Richard Hendricks, of Utica, was involved in an argument with several people at the intersection of Jason and Whitesboro streets at about 11:15 p.m. Sunday. Police said Hendricks pulled out a handgun and fired several shots at the other people. No one was hit.

Several spent shell casings were found in the area, police stated. The victims were familiar with Hendricks and police began to search for him.

At about 5:30 p.m. Monday, police said Hendricks was spotted in the 1400-block of Whitesboro St. Police said Hendricks fled on foot when officers tried to apprehend him, and he was taken into custody following a brief pursuit. A loaded, defaced, 9mm handgun was found in his pants, authorities stated.

Hendricks is charged with two counts each of second and third-degree possession of a weapon and one count each of criminal possession of a firearm and attempted first-degree assault, police said. He is scheduled to appear in Utica City Court.
