UTICA — A shooting investigation in the Cornhill district in Utica has led to charges against a 23-year-old man, who was taken into custody following a separate dispute on Wednesday, according to the Utica Police Department.

Police said Idris Brown, 23, of Utica, approached a vehicle in the 1500 block of Neilson St. at bout 12:30 a.m. July 23 and he opened fire, shooting a man in the thigh who was sitting in the vehicle. Police said Brown then fled the scene.

Brown was soon identified as a suspect and police said they were on the lookout.

Brown was spotted on Wednesday engaged in a fight with another person on Deborah Drive at about 9:30 p.m., police stated. By the time officers arrived on scene, they said Brown had fled the area, so they began searching for a vehicle he was said to be driving.

The vehicle was found and pulled over on Pleasant Street Wednesday night and Brown was taken into custody.

Brown is charged with first-degree assault, first-degree robbery and second-degree possession of a weapon for the July 23 shooting, and two counts of fourth-degree mischief for the fight on Deborah Drive, police stated. He is scheduled to appear in Utica City Court.
