Man faces DWI, unlicensed operation charges after accident

VILLAGE OF LOWVILLE — A 28-year-old was charged with driving under the influence following a crash on Route 12 Fourth of July evening.

Lewis County Sheriff’s deputies said they responded to a report of an accident on Route 12, near the Route 177 intersection, and found that the driver, later identified as Nicholas A. E. Polhamus, of 270 Moulton St., Watertown, had fled the scene on foot at approximately 7 p.m.

Polhamus was located a short time later and transported by Lewis County Search and Rescue to Lewis County General Hospital. An investigation revealed that the driver was intoxicated, deputies said.

Polhamus was charged with driving while intoxicated and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation. He will appear in Lowville Town Court.

State police, Lowville Fire Department, state Forest Rangers, Lowville Police and Kafline’s Towing assisted.
