ROME  — A 46-year-old man has been charged with violating an order of protection after he went to his ex-girlfriend’s property to collect his belongings, according to the Rome Police Department.

Police said Roberto Rivera, of Rome, telephoned his ex-girlfriend on Aug. 6 and told her he was coming to her Liberty Gardens home to collect his belongings, despite being court-ordered to stay away from her. At about 10:17 a.m., police said Rivera showed up and broke into her shed.

When the ex opened her back door to see what was happening, police said Rivera charged at her. The woman was able to close and lock the door before he reached her.

A warrant was issued for Rivera and he was located and taken into custody Wednesday morning. Rivera is charged with one count each of felony first-degree contempt, fourth-degree mischief and trespass, police said.

He is scheduled to appear in Rome City Court.
