Accused of stabbing his girlfriend’s ex during a custody dispute on Rome’s south side Thursday, a 25-year-old man is facing a felony charge.
Police said Derrick T. Snell, of 418 Ann St., was involved in a custody dispute at his residence at about 1 p.m. Thursday involving his girlfriend and her child’s father. The girlfriend and the man have a child in common, authorities stated.
At some point during the dispute, police said Snell used a knife to repeatedly stab his girlfriend’s ex several times in the torso. Police said Snell then fled the scene.
Officers were initially called to Ann Street at about 1:09 p.m. to act as peace officers during the custody dispute. When the officers arrived on the scene at 1:22 p.m., they said they found the victim lying on the ground with stab wounds across the street from the residence.
The victim — 35-year-old Jeremy M. Jaegers — was rushed to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica, according to police. He underwent emergency surgery and was last listed in stable condition, police said. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Authorities said they continued to monitor 418 Ann St., and Snell eventually returned home at about 12:13 a.m. Friday. Police responded and Snell was taken into custody.
Police officials said they are still investigating what led to the dispute, as well as what weapon Snell is accused of using.
Snell is charged with one count of second-degree assault, a class D felony, authorities said. He is scheduled for arraignment today in court.
