Man accused of spraying, punching and kicking woman

A man was charged with assaulting a woman who arrived to pick someone up at a Canal Street residence Friday night.

Rome Police Detective Jeffrey M. Lanigan said the victim reported that she went to pick up a friend at 310 Canal St. at 8:25 p.m., when one of two men outside began spraying her and her car with water.

When the woman got out of her vehicle to confront the perpetrators, she was struck in the back of the head with a shovel, Lanigan said.

After being hit, suspect Dustin A. Underwood, 29, of 47 Brett St., Verona, also kicked and punched the victim, the Rome police detective added.

Underwood was charged with one count each of second-degree and third-degree assault, Lanigan said. Underwood was held in city lock-up pending his Saturday morning arraignment.
