Man accused of posing as police officer

A Herkimer County man is accused of posing as a police officer to try and shake down people for claims of unpaid fines, according to law enforcement officials.

Herkimer Police said Gary Perkett, 41, of Herkimer, used a fake badge and approached at least three people recently, claiming to be a police officer seeking to collect cash for unpaid fines.

Following an investigation, police said they were able to identify Perkett and he was taken into custody on Monday.

Perkett is charged with one count each of
second-degree burglary, second-degree imprisonment, second-degree tampering, petty larceny and three counts of first-degree impersonation, police stated.

He was arraigned in court and was sent to county jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail, according to the law enforcers.

Police said Perkett will also answer for 14 open criminal cases, many of which involve other fraudulent scams.
