Man accused of hiring teenage prostitute

A 57-year-old Utica man has been charged with hiring a teenage prostitute for sex, according to law enforcement officials.

State police said John A. Stemen, 57, met a 17-year-old over the internet and paid them $200 for a sexual date. Stemen was taken into custody on Friday.

Stemen is charged with one count of third-degree patronizing a prostitute, a misdemeanor, troopers said. He was released on an appearance ticket for Utica City Court on May 20.

Stemen had been employed by the office of Congressman Anthony J. Brindisi, D-22, Utica. The office issued the following statement: “As soon as we were made aware of the charges, John Stemen was immediately terminated from his position.”
