Kimberly Copeland of Verona learned she had breast cancer after her first mammogram on the Upstate University Mobile Mammogram van.

When were you diagnosed, what age and what stage?

On Oct. 13, 2021, at age 41, I was diagnosed with estrogen and progesterone positive, HERS2 negative, stage 1b invasive ductal carcinoma.

How was the cancer initially detected?

The cancer was initially detected at my first mammogram, which I received on the Upstate University Mobile Mammogram Van on Sept. 13, 2021.

What was your treatment process?

My treatment plan from the amazing team at Upstate was to have a double mastectomy with breast reconstruction on Dec. 6, 2021, after which time pathology on the tumors would determine if I would need chemo or radiation therapy. I was advised to undergo four rounds of chemotherapy, which started on Feb. 11, 2022, and ended April 15. Fortunately, I did not need radiation. The second stage of my reconstruction surgery took place on June 23. For the next five years, I will take one medication daily and an injection every three months.

What message would you like to provide to others in the community?

I would like others in the community to know how important it is to take care of yourself and get screened. I was only 41 with no family history of breast cancer. The “Mammo Van” made my appointment fast and convenient — and it saved my life.
