CAZENOVIA — A Madison County man charged in the deaths of two people during a motor vehicle crash pleaded not guilty in Madison County Court on Thursday, according to court officials.

Justin Haines, 35, of New Woodstock, pleaded not guilty before Judge Patrick J. O'Sullivan to one count each of aggravated vehicular homicide, first-degree vehicular manslaughter and driving while ability impaired by drugs, as well as two counts each of second-degree manslaughter and criminal negligent homicide. His case was adjourned to Jan. 5.

Investigators said Haines was eastbound at a high rate of speed and under the influence of drugs at 12:30 p.m. July 20 on Route 92 in Cazenovia. Authorities said Haines passed several vehicles on the shoulder before he lost control of his 2004 GMC Yukon and crashed head-on with a westbound 2015 Ford Focus in the oncoming lane.

Driver Deborah Sorrentino, 69, of Syracuse, was killed in the crash, and passenger Augusta Sorrentino, 92, of Manlius, died from her injuries at the hospital, authorities stated.
