SMITHFIELD — A Tuesday afternoon fatal motor vehicle crash on North Butler Road is under investigation by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.

Around 12:42 p.m. sheriff’s deputies responded to the 5700 block of North Butler Road in the Smithfield, for a reported one vehicle crash with unknown injuries.

On arrival, deputies observed a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado in a ditch off the western shoulder of the roadway, facing north.

The operator, and sole occupant of the vehicle, identified as 60-year-old Ricky Paone, from Chittenango, was transported to Oneida Health, where he died from his injuries. 

“The investigation has shown that Paone’s vehicle was traveling northbound on North Butler Road, when it exited the western shoulder of the roadway and subsequently struck a tree and ditch. Speed and alcohol are not considered to be factors in the accident,” noted a release from authorities.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the New York State Police, Smithfield Fire Department, Morrisville Fire Department, SEVAC Ambulance, and the Madison County Department of Emergency Management.
