TOWN OF AVA — A horse was killed when it got loose from its pen and wandered onto Route 26 late Saturday night, according to law enforcement officials.
Deputies said BillieJoe Caporilli, 56, of Rome, was southbound on Route 26 at about 10:30 p.m. when a horse walked into the roadway from the west shoulder. Deputies said Caporilli was unable to avoid the collision and her 2007 Toyota Camry hit the horse, killing it on impact.
A passenger in the vehicle, 34-year-old Derek Still, of Ava, was taken to Rome Memorial Hospital for evaluation, authorities said. Caporilli and a second passenger were not injured. Deputies said no tickets were issued.
An investigation discovered that the horse was in a fenced area at a nearby farm and managed to get loose on its own. The horse was returned to the farm.
