Local resident calls on community’s support for Kirkland Town Library

CLINTON — On May 21, the Clinton community has the opportunity to vote to support the Kirkland Town Library’s budget request, and I hope that we voters turn out to support our library.

When the vote passes, the library will have better funding to cover their projected expenses for 2020. We all know what a valuable asset the library is to our community.

Our children frequently have opportunities to participate in reading activities at the library as well as various STEM projects (a fun but slightly messy attempt to master engineering and physics by crafting a container to help an egg survive a drop from the building’s tower, comes to mind).

A strong public library — as research demonstrates — contributes to the educational achievement and social development of young people in its community. The library provides life-long learning programs to Clintonians of all ages.

Readers like me constantly discover exciting books on the shelves of new acquisitions. The upstairs room in the library displays visual art from our community. And the KTL offers exciting and unique opportunities for its borrowing community — the seed exchange, for example, or the opportunity to borrow a telescope, a robot, or cake pans.

I will be proud to cast my vote in support of our library’s budget, and I hope you will be, too. It’s not just a vote to help the library, but a vote for our library to continue and improve its outstanding educational and social contribution to our community.

— Gary Leising, Clinton
