Local resident becomes supercentenarian
UTICA — Cheers to 110 years! Marguerite Redmond celebrated her 110th birthday on Thursday, Dec. 1 alongside her family with residents and staff at Mohawk Valley Health System's Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
Redmond was born on Dec. 1, 1912 in Yorkville, New York. She spent most of her adult years working as a seamstress and raising her children, as well as gardening, knitting, baking pies and taking vacations to Maine.
Redmond's life has spanned two world wars, the women's suffrage movement, Prohibition, stock market crashes and global pandemics.
Becoming a supercentenarian, or one who has reached the age of 110, is an extremely rare milestone. According to the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, around one in 1,000 people who live to the age of 100 will make it to 110.
On achieving this significant milestone, Redmond said "you always think it's going to be somebody else, I can't believe it's me."
