Preparations are under way for the annual Wreaths Across America program in which memorial wreaths will be placed on graves of U.S. military veterans in over 3,200 cemeteries including the Rome area.

Local veterans will be remembered with wreath placements at noon on Saturday, Dec. 17, according to an announcement by the Greater Rome-Utica Chapter, Military Officers Association of America.

The public is invited to the events at Rome Cemetery as well as Evergreen Cemetery in Lee Center and Westernville Cemetery, local organizers say, adding family members and friends of deceased veterans are encouraged to attend and participate in placing wreaths.

The mission of the program is to remember fallen veterans, honor those serving in the military and their families, and teach the next generation the value and high cost of freedom, said officials with the GRUC-MOAA.

The ceremonies have been organized by the chapter in cooperation with the staffs of local cemeteries and the national Wreaths Across America headquarters.

Wreaths can be purchased by individuals, businesses and organizations. A portion of the proceeds go to GRUC-MOAA to help in the funding of assistance to Junior ROTC units at Rome Free Academy, Proctor and Notre Dame high schools in Utica and Central Valley Academy in Ilion along with other youth and veterans groups.
