Local jobless rate 3.9% in July

The unemployment rate in the Utica-Rome MSA declined from 5.3 percent in July 2021 to 3.9 percent in July 2022. However, the unemployment rate rose from 3.5 percent in June.

UTICA-ROME — The unemployment rate in the Utica-Rome MSA declined from 5.3 percent in July 2021 to 3.9 percent in July 2022.

However, the unemployment rate rose from 3.5 percent in June.

Change in non-farm jobs since July

For the 12-month period ending July, the non-farm job count in the Utica-Rome MSA increased 1,400, or 1.2 percent, to 121,900. Private sector employment rose 1,500, or 1.6 percent, to 92,500.

Job gains were posted in: leisure and hospitality, plus 400; manufacturing, plus 300; trade, transportation, and utilities, plus 300; education and health services, plus 200; other services, plus 200; financial activities, plus 100; and professional and business services, plus 100.

Losses were recorded in government, a decline of 100 jobs; and information, also a decline of 100.

County rankings

Oneida County ranked at 40 of 62 counties in the state for its unemployment rate which was 3.8% in July, an increase from 3.5% in June.

Madison County ranked at 24 with an unemployment rate of 3.4%, an increase from 3.1% in June.

Herkimer County ranked 41 at 3.9 percent in July, an increase from 3.7% in June; and Lewis County ranked 32 at 3.6 %, an increase from 3.2% in June, according to the state Bureau of Labor Statistics.
