Local eatery, The Compound, to close next month in Utica

UTICA — Local sandwich shop The Compound has announced they will close their doors for good next month.

The Compound, located at 106 Genesee St., in Bagg's Square, serves breakfast and lunch, with a focus on gourmet butters and sandwiches. Owners Anna and Sharrone Sofer announced on social media on Friday that they will be closing their restaurant due to a variety of factors, including inflation and personal tragedies.

"We have made many mistakes in moving to this Utica location. We got in over our heads. We had a big dream and ignored the reality of making that dream come true," the owners wrote in their announcement.

The Compound started with a location on West Park Row in Clinton in October 2020, with a focus on locally furnished ingredients and products. The Sofers then opened a second location in Utica in March 2022, before closing their Clinton restaurant in April 2022.

The Utica location will now close on Feb. 18.

"Unforeseen expenses, an economic downturn, inflation, debilitating illness and other personal tragedies became too much for us to overcome," the owners announced.

"We've fallen behind on payments, we've tapped out all of our resources in the effort to fight to keep the shop open. But it isn't working and we can't fight the inevitable anymore — no matter how much we love Utica and all that we have built here."
