UTICA — A Utica man was charged with possessing a loaded revolver after he tried to forcibly leave a traffic stop Thursday evening, according to the Utica Police Department.

Police said Demetrius Sewell, 42, was a passenger in a vehicle that was pulled over for a vehicle violation near Oneida Square around 6:40 p.m. Thursday. Police said the driver was found to have a suspended license, and the vehicle would need to be towed.

Sewell got out of the vehicle and shoved past the officers in an attempt to flee on foot, police said. The officers grabbed him and said they found a loaded, .38-caliber revolver in his pocket.

Sewell is charged with one count each of second and third-degree possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm, second-degree obstruction of a governmental administration and second-degree harassment, police said. He is scheduled to appear in Utica City Court.

The driver was ticketed for several vehicle and traffic violations, police noted.
