Liquidation sales begin for Philipson's
SIGNS OF CLOSING TIME — Above, store closing sale signs line the windows at the Herb Philipson’s store, 1899 Black River Blvd. A bankruptcy judge last week cleared the way for the closure of the three remaining stores — in Rome, New Hartford and Herkimer — ruling that the nearly 70-year-old retail chain could begin liquidation sales immediately. While below, a sign on the door of the Byrne Dairy store at the corner of North James and Turin streets announces that store’s closure, effective Sunday, Sept. 29. The closure had been anticipated with the opening of a new and expanded Byrne Dairy store, complete with gas pumps, at 216 Erie Blvd. E.
