LETTER: Now up to Justice Department to do its duty

Posted

Last Friday, January 6, 2023, was the second anniversary of the most serious attack on our democracy since the Civil War. A recent letter writer tried to make light of the investigation as a waste of taxpayer money.

On the contrary, this investigation was the most important undertaken by the Congress since at least the Watergate hearings. On that date supporters of ex-President Donald Trump attempted to overturn the results of a free and fair election to have Mr. Trump remain in office for another four years.

Elections are the linchpin of our democracy. Without them our democracy would be impossible.

Mr. Trump attempted to subvert the outcome of the Presidential election since the results had become known in November. He interfered with state officials who were only doing their jobs in reporting the results. The culmination of his illegal efforts occurred on January 6th.

On that date he held a rally to inspire his followers to storm the Capitol to prevent the Constitutional requirement to count the electoral votes for President. That same afternoon, Trump did nothing to call off his followers from the attack on the Capital for three hours, but watched the assault on television. For these and other crimes the Committee recommended that he be indicted. If the Department of Justice does not do its duty, a terrible precedent will be made in which any future president will believe that they can break the law with impunity — thus endeth our democracy!
