ONEIDA — A 23-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the foot inside a Madison County Walmart Monday evening, according to law enforcers.

Police said Guthrie J. Hood was not licensed to carry a concealed weapon, let alone in the toy aisle of a busy department store.

Guthrie, of Pine Ridge Road, Town of Lenox, was walking through the toy aisle of the Oneida Walmart, 2024 Genesee St., at about 7:15 p.m. when his 9mm handgun went off, according to police officers.

Guthrie was carrying the weapon in his pocket at the time, officers said.

The gunshot blasted Hood in the foot, the police investigators said, and the bullet ended up lodged in his foot, prompting a call for rescue personnel in addition to police.

When rescue personnel arrived, Hood was transported to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica for treatment, officials said.

Investigators said Hood has a handgun permit, but added that he is
not endorsed for concealed carry.

Hood is charged with second-degree reckless endangerment and fourth-degree possession of a weapon, authorities stated.

He is scheduled to appear in City Court.
