Lee Republican Committee announces candidate for town clerk

LEE — The Lee Republican Committee has announced Laura Kinney will be their candidate for Lee town clerk in this upcoming general election.

Sharon Mortis was running for reelection as the town clerk but passed away unexpectedly on Oct. 4. The Lee Republican Committee was forced to find a new candidate.

Chairwoman Charlene Rouillier said they only had 10 days to canvass a new candidate for subsitution.

Rouillier said the Committee had four candidates in total — one withdraw their application initially, another showed up to the screening process unannounced, and the other three were people the Committee had spoken to before.

When asked what set Kinney apart, Rouillier said it was her background and the answers to the Committee’s questions.

“She’s a current member of the Lee Center Fire Department and she’s an EMT,” Rouillier said.

The whole situation had been a stressful affair for the Lee Republican Committee and was something the Oneida County Board of Elections had never seen before, according to Rouillier.

The general election will take place on Nov. 2. For more information on the election or how to vote, visit www.ocgovboe.net
