Lee leaf pickers want town residents to lighten the load

TOWN OF LEE — The town’s roadside leaf pickup program has faced problems this spring with leaf bags being packed too heavily, says town Highway Superintendent William Baker, who is urging town residents to keep the bag weights at 30 pounds or less.

The roadside leaf collection will continue until the end of May and resume this fall, said Baker.

Baker expressed concern about the leaf-bag weights at the Town Board meeting Tuesday night.

Overly heavy bags can be difficult for town staffers to pick up, said Baker, adding “we don’t want anybody getting hurt” plus extra-heavy bags can rip.

The biodegradable bags are provided for free through the town, and more are available rather than trying to fill each bag excessively, Baker added after the meeting.
