ONEIDA — The Oneida branch of the YMCA of the Greater Tri-Valley is inviting youngsters ages 8 to 16 to learn the fundamentals of fencing. “Learn to Fence” begins Friday, Dec. 16. Register now on the YMCA’s website, www.ymcatrivalley.com. Members and non-members may register.

Expert fencer Coach “Lubo” will teach the style of epee including the basic skills and techniques needed to become a fencer.

Coach Lubomir Kalpaktchiev is a 25-year veteran instructor and qualifying competitor in international fencing, winning the gold medal eight times from 1993 to 2005 in regional and international tournaments. In addition to the YMCA, Coach “Lubo” teaches classes at Syracuse Musketeers Fencing Center and Syracuse University.

“The YMCA fencing program offers young people an opportunity to try something different,” Kalpaktchiev explained. “The sport develops eye-hand coordination, agility, flexibility, balance, strength and cardiovascular endurance. In addition to physical skills, fencing helps participants learn discipline and how to think fast on their feet.”

The six-week program includes:

  • Skills and techniques;
  • Footwork exercises;
  • Strategy exercises; and
  • Fun games and matches.

Classes for ages 8-11 run from 5-5:50 p.m., and ages 12-16 meet from 6-6:50 p.m. each week through Jan. 20 at the Oneida YMCA, 701 Seneca St. Cost is $80 for YMCA members and $120 for non-members.
