Jobless rates in region remain steady

The unemployment rate in the Utica-Rome area remained stable from December 2021 to December 2022 at 3.3%. The unemployment rate was 3% in November.

Change in Non-farm Jobs since December 2022

For the 12-month period ending December 2022, the non-farm job count in the Utica-Rome MSA increased 2,100, or 1.7%, to 123,500. Private sector employment rose 1,500, or 1.6%, to 92,800.

Job gains were posted in: education and health services, plus 1,000; government, plus 600; other services, plus 300; leisure and hospitality, plus 200; and trade, transportation, and utilities, plus 100. Professional and business services was the only industry to decline over the year, down 100 jobs.

County rankings

• Oneida County ranked at 30 of 62 counties in the state for its unemployment rate which was 3.1% in December, up from 2.9% in November.

• Madison County also ranked at 30 with an unemployment rate of 3.1%. am increase from 2.6% in November.

• Herkimer County ranked 50 at 3.8%, an increase from 3.3% in November.

• Lewis County ranked 56 at 4.1%, an increase from 3.2% in November, according to the state Bureau of Labor Statistics.
