The unemployment rate in the Utica-Rome area declined from 5% in May 2021 to 3.3% in May 2022. The unemployment rate fell from 3.4% in April.

The unemployment rate in the Utica-Rome area declined from 5% in May 2021 to 3.3% in May 2022.

The unemployment rate fell from 3.4% in April.

Non-farm jobs

For the 12-month period ending May 2022, the non-farm job count in the Utica-Rome MSA increased by 700, or 0.6%, to 121,500. Private sector employment rose 600, or 0.7%, to 91,300.

Job gains were posted in: leisure and hospitality, plus 1,000; manufacturing, plus 500; financial activities, plus 300; other services, plus 200; professional and business service, plus 100; and trade, transportation, and utilities, plus 100.

Job losses occurred in education and health services, a decline of 1,500 jobs, and natural resources, mining, and construction, minus 100 jobs.

County rankings

  • Oneida County ranked at 39 of 62 counties in the state for its unemployment rate which was 3.2% in May, a decline from 3.3% in April.
  • Madison County ranked at 16 with an unemployment rate of 2.8%, a decline from 3% in April.
  • Herkimer County ranked 51 at 3.5%, declining from 3.9% in April; and
  • Lewis County ranked 39 with Oneida County at 3.2%, a decline from 4.0% in April, according to the state Bureau of Labor Statistics.
