Jervis Public Library will present “Financing Your College Education” with a representative of the state’s Department of Financial Services on Monday, May 20 at 6:30 p.m.
No registration is necessary, and the program is free to attend.
Topics covered will include filling out FAFSA, grants, scholarships, types of loans available, financial aid, and state programs such as free tuition and loan forgiveness. All high school and college students and their parents are encouraged to attend.
According to New York state, the Department of Financial Services was created in 2011 in part to educate consumers about student loans. The department reports that student loan debt is the fastest growing category of consumer debt and is now the second largest category of debt after mortgages, with outstanding loan balances of approximately $1.3 trillion.
Many consumers are struggling to repay student debt and are unaware of the variety of payment options available for their federal student loans. Moreover, some unscrupulous companies are attempting to take advantage of struggling borrowers by charging hundreds of dollars for services that borrowers can access on their own for free.
