Jelovac returns to Utica City FC
UTICA — Bo is back with Utica City FC.
Bo Jelovac, the Major Arena Soccer League team’s co-captain for the squad’s three seasons of existence, has re-signed with Utica for the upcoming season. No terms of his deal were released by the team, which announced the move Tuesday afternoon on social media.
The move isn’t surprising considering Jelovac has been with the organization since 2012. The team was previously based in Syracuse before moving to Utica in 2018. Jelovac, who played four soccer seasons at the University of Albany along with two seasons at the professional level in the Czech Republic and his native Serbia for two years, turns 35 in October.
In 24 games during the 2021-22 campaign — the most he’s played over the last seven seasons — he finished with 17 points on eight goals and nine assists. His points ranked fourth for Utica.
In 85 games with Utica the last three seasons, he has 43 goals and 42 assists. The team didn’t play in 2021 due to challenges with the COVID-19 pandemic.
As of Tuesday evening, Jelovac was one of 10 players listed on the team’s roster for the upcoming season after the team also announced Timmy Goldman re-signed last week. The others are co-captain Nate Bourdeau, Domenico Vitale, Cristhian Segura, Ronaldinho Diniz, Andrew Coughlin, Quenton Swift and Juan Alava.
Utica, which finished 10-14 overall and missed the playoffs, is set to have a new coach next season. The 42-year-old Hewerton Moreira was named the new coach in May.
The MASL — which lists 14 teams active for the 2022-23 season as Utica’s closest geographical rival Rochester is inactive —has not announced when the new campaign will begin. The 2021-22 season began in late November, which is similar to when the MASL began play in 2019.
